iKey Driver Compatibility Notes

For any PC that will be used to run JRAPublish batch jobs, a functional USB controller must be installed prior to installation of the iKey Driver. Note that most PCs are manufactured or built today with a functional USB controller, and most offer multiple USB ports. You must have an available USB port in which to plug in the iKey. It may be an internal or an external port.

All Windows Versions

Your installation of the iKey driver will NOT require a system reboot, and you can begin to use the iKey immediately upon installation of the driver. Thereafter, the iKey is "hot-swappable" - just plug it in while Windows is running and it will be automatically recognized.

If you are planning to upgrade your operating system, uninstall the iKey Driver BEFORE you perform the system upgrade. After you have upgraded your system, you can then re-install the iKey Driver.

Windows Vista

You must have administrator rights to install the iKey Driver.

The iKey Driver is not recognized by Windows Remote Desktop, an bundled component for remote desktop access on a network. Use a different remote access application such as VNC to work around this problem.

Windows XP

The iKey Driver is not recognized by Windows Remote Desktop, an optional component for remote desktop access on a network. Use a different remote access application such as VNC to work around this problem.

Windows 2000

The iKey Driver is not recognized by Windows Remote Desktop, an optional component for remote desktop access on a network. Use a different remote access application such as VNC to work around this problem.

If you are installing into Windows 2000, then in order to run the iKey driver installer from within the JRAPublish install program, you must have distributed COM services enabled for the current user. If not, the iKey driver installer will fail. If this occurs, you can install the iKey driver installer separately, using the shortcut provided in the JRA Software shortcuts folder.

Windows NT 4.0

The Microsoft Smart Card Base Components and Microsoft Smart Card Library Update are installed by the iKey Driver setup program. The iKey Driver requires the Microsoft Smart Card Base Components in order to operate under the PC/SC environment.

Under Windows NT 4.0, installed applications and/or smart card readers that use the PC/SC environment may remove, upon uninstallation, the SMCLIB.SYS file from the %SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers directory.

This file is required by the iKey Device Driver and can cause a system trap if removed. As a result, we recommend you do the following:

           1.  Uninstall the iKey Driver.

           2.  Uninstall the PC/SC applications and/or smart card readers

                drivers.

           3.  Re-install the iKey Driver.

This will prevent an uninstall program from removing this file and causing a system trap.

If another USB product is already installed, the iKey Driver will not install. You must uninstall the other vendor's product prior to installing the iKey Driver. This avoids possible compatibility issues with another vendor's USB stack implementation.
