Ghostscript Installation Notes

JRAPublish uses an open source application called GPL Ghostscript 8.62 when it is installed on your PC. It is used by JRAPublish to decode PostScript (.ps, .eps) files and optionally to rasterize PDF files.

Installing GPL Ghostscript 8.62

GPL Ghostscript 8.62 has its own Windows install program. JRAPublish provides two methods for installing Ghostscript using the pre-compiled Ghostscript install program.

First, you can install it from the JRAPublish Resource CD that was included (bundled) with your JRAPublish Installation CD.  This method of installation is recommended, because it is the fastest and does not rely on an internet connection.

Second, during the installation of JRAPublish, if the installer detects that GPL Ghostscript 8.62 is not already installed, you will be prompted to automatically download and install it from the internet. For this you must have an active internet connection on the PC on which you are installing JRAPublish.

For licensing reasons, Ghostscript is not included on the JRAPublish Installation CD. If your installation of Ghostscript failed during the installation of JRAPublish because you did not have an active internet connection, then simply insert the JRAPublish Resource CD and install it from there, after you have competed the JRAPublish installation.

Running JRAPublish without Ghostscript

JRAPublish will run perfectly fine without Ghostscript, except that you will not be able to process PostScript (.ps, .eps) files as input files, and you will not be able to rasterize PDF files with Ghostscript as an alternative to using the JRAPublish Internal Rasterizer. For these reasons, the installation of Ghostscript is recommended.

You can install GPL Ghostscript 8.62 at any time after installing JRAPublish.

About other Ghostscript Versions on your PC

Note that JRAPublish uses only this specific 8.54 version of Ghostscript. If you have other versions of Ghostscript on your PC, they can remain on your PC and they will be ignored by JRAPublish.

Uninstalling Ghostscript

GPL Ghostscript 8.62 creates not one, but two installation entries which you can view in the Add/Remove Programs listing of Windows. These are "GPL Ghostscript 8.62" and "Ghostscript Fonts".  Run both of these uninstallers if you wish to uninstall Ghostscript yourself in the future.

When you uninstall JRAPublish, you now have an option to uninstall Ghostscript at the same time..

Other versions of Ghostscript on your PC

JRAPublish will ignore earlier or later versions of Ghostscript that may be installed. To check your PC for your installed versions of Ghostscript, go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and look for "AFPL Ghostscript" and "GNU Ghostscript" and "GPL Ghostscript"  in the list of installed programs.
