Memorial Day Weekend DUI Arrests Hit 219

May 29, 2012 -According to reports the numbers in for Memorial Day weekend DUI arrests total 219. According to Orange County law enforcement agencies there were a total of 219 people arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence over the holiday weekend.

Orange County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Wayne Howard said that from Friday night through Monday night there were arrests made using checkpoints and roving patrols. Howard said that the number could go higher, with other law enforcement agencies reporting their arrests.

The multi agency taskforce known as “Avoid the 38, “ including the California Highway Patrol and the Orange County Sheriff’s department was involved in the Memorial Day weekend arrests. According to authorities the number of DUI arrests was 201 and this year the reported number so far is 219.

The California Highway Patrol made 74 driving under the influence arrests, which is an increase over 53 arrests made over last year’s Memorial Day weekend. The “Avoid the 38” program is funded for law enforcement agencies by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Authorities said the next planned “Avoid the 38” enforcement period will be for July 4th and a summer campaign between August 17 and September 3rd.
